Sternwheeler
Pictured is a typical wood fired steam driven sternwheel river boat as used on Canada's northern rivers and lakes. The last of the big steamboats on the Athabasca river worked until 1939. Most of the others ran aground on sandbars or exploded and caught fire. They were shallow draught vessels and if stranded, broke apart more often than not before they could be salvaged.
